WGRP first signed on September 19, 1959 under the ownership of Greenville Broadcasting Company, headed by Kenneth Anderson, (November 8, 1911 - January 1978) who served as general manager and chief engineer, and his wife Ethel Brown Anderson, with his brother Merle Anderson (August 31, 1919 - September 19, 2000) serving as station manager and program director. The station first operated from studios located at 2 Water Street in downtown Greenville, and operated at its
current frequency, daytime power output, and directional antenna pattern. However, the station did not have nighttime power authorization in these early years. In later years, the station would move all of its operations to an office constructed at its transmitter facility at 44 McCracken Rd. (pictured below) in West Salem Township, just outside the Greenville corporate limits.
After several different ownerships of WGRP Radio, Vilkie Communications of Meadville, PA, a locally owned broadcast company, purchased WGRP AM 940 in December of 2011. WGRP 940 AM then started out playing classic hits of the rock era from the 1950s to the 1970s. Then in July 2018, Vilkie Communications changed the format of WGRP radio to the AC Style format playing the 1980's,1990's through today genre music. Along with the format change, Vilkie Communications brought WGRP back to the FM Frequency. WGRP Radio now can be heard on both 92.7 FM and 940 AM. The locally owned and operated station still is committed to covering local community events, including high school sports, local fairs and fundraising events along with featuring a variety of local programming. WGRP Radio is also proud to be a member of the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Everyone always asks: What does WGRP stand for?
When the Andersons first went on the air in 1959 with WGRP out of the Progress Building in downtown Greenville, they wanted to see Downtown Greenville always keep moving forward...... so "WGRP" stands for ..... Watch Greenville Really Progress.
Greenville's Local Radio - WGRP 92.7 FM and 940 AM also has a Sister station COOL 101.7 located in Meadville PA.
